Prof. T.G Sitharam, Director IIT Guwahati Appointed as the new AICTE Chairman

Prof. T.G. Sitharam, the director of IIT Guwahati, has been chosen to head the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

Prof. T.G. Sitharam will succeed UGC Chairman Mr. Jagadesh Kumar, who served as acting AICTE Chairman when Mr. Anil Sahasrabuddhe was relieved of his duties on September 1, 2021.

His appointment coincides with the Ministry of Education finishing up a Bill that aims to combine the AICTE and the University Grants Commission into a single super-regulator known as the Higher Education Commission of India.

Prof. T.G. Sitharam has taught in the department of civil engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, for more than 27 years before taking the helm as director of IIT Guwahati. He previously held the position of chair professor for the IISc Department of Energy and Mechanical Sciences. His areas of research interest include earth dams and tailing ponds, geotechnical earthquake engineering, and rock mechanics and engineering.
