With the number of COVID-19 cases on the rise in the state, the Maharashtra government has decided to postpone Class 10 (SSC) and Class 12 (HSC) examinations which were expected to be held in April, according to news reports.

As per reports, Maharashtra School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad noted that the current scenario is not conducive to holding exams and that the government will suggest other boards such as the CBSE, ICSE, IB and Cambridge boards to reconsider their exams as well.

Now, Class 12 board exams in Maharashtra will be held in May, while Class 10 exams will be held in June. The exams were earlier scheduled to be held in the last week of April.

A tweet by Minister Gaikwad read, “Given the current COVID-19 situation in Maharashtra, we’ve postponed state board exams for Class 10th & 12th. The present circumstances are not conducive for holding exams. Your health is our priority,”

The Minister pointed out that the decision to post the examinations was reached after consultations with various education stakeholders, elected representatives, parents and students, etc.

Minister Gaikwad said, “During the consultations, various alternative assessment options were evaluated keeping the health, well-being and future of our students in mind. Postponing exams seemed to be the most pragmatic solution”.

Last week, the Minister shared that the government is contemplating alternative methods to evaluate board exam students.

Reiterating that students’ safety is the foremost priority of the government, she said, “I have a clear idea that some parents and students are uncomfortable about the board exams in view of the growing COVID cases. I am consulting with student representatives, tech giants, parents, teachers and other experts regarding alternatives for the assessment of HSC and SSC board students.

Meanwhile, there have been growing calls for the cancellation or postponement of CBSE boards exams this year.
